"No, it's not easy to. It's never easy to," Jaime said ruefully.

It was always on his mind, especially with the never-ending torrent of desperate people trying to escape, some of them even dying during the long trek across the desert and the dangerous river crossings. People had always died while crossing but with so many more crossing now there were far more deaths.

And that wasn't even getting into the increase in vigilante killings and overuse of force by the Border Patrol.

"Every day it's something new," he said. "Today was a lazy day because if I didn't have one now and again I'd go crazy, but most days I start the morning working with the joint US-Mexican task force 'til mid-afternoon doing whatever I can."

Busting weapons smugglers and ruing drug runs, bringing in high profile targets for arrest, all of that business.

"And theeeen it's practice with the Young Allies, Defenders practice, superhero homework, and answering calls in between and superheroing 'til about 10 o'clock at night. Then I come home and crash. Rinse, repeat."

He drew in a deep breath and let it out.

"Sometimes it feels like nothing is changing, you know? But then I think about what would happen if I didn't do it and I know it'd get even worse."
