[AI] Odysseus Shrugged
Far too many heroes remain missing. Far too many friends, colleagues, siblings ripped away to abandon their return to sheer, capricious fortune. Search efforts were undertaken, though the circumstances of the universe-shattering events remained unclear. How could those who returned do any less?
The scientists had concocted many theories. Sensors, probes, mathematics - a dizzying array of ephemera that meant nothing to a warrior born. Several months ago, however, someone finally gave Hercules something he could understand - a door. A portal, more precisely, to one of those realms between realms that still existed, and to which some of his colleagues may have returned. He had volunteered instantly to explore this realm for any sign of other heroes of the two worlds, to bring them home. He had set forth from the secure 'Exploration Laboratory' of the Baxter Building, alone.
Today, as regularly scheduled, the gateway flickers back to life to permit the return of the mighty explorer it had sent forth - and he is no longer alone.
The power surges as the gateway emits two entangled figures - the son of Zeus, and an immense, translucent white bulk, covered in grasping tendrils and enormous red eyes. They burst from the portal with sufficient momentum to impact the far wall, the tentacled creature burbling in an utterly alien language all the while.
Hercules recovers his footing, pushing back against the wall with one foot - using the other to pin one of the creature's manifold limbs, as his hands seek to constrain several others.
"Aye, so you've said. How was I to know it was your wife and not your daughter? I think you will be forced to agree there's a certain resemblance!"
The response seems to anger the creature further, limbs twitching and lashing at Hercules's flesh as it burbles more rapidly.
"Then perhaps you might pay more attention to the both of them, so this sort of thing might not happen again!"
Slowly, but surely, Hercules begins to move - his feet digging into the durable metallic floor, sliding the enormous creature inexorably back towards the portal.
[ooc: Hi, folks! Feel free to jump on in here if you have a character who might be at the Baxter Building and feels like helping Herc get the jealous jellyfish back through the gateway, and/or chat afterwards.]

Y'know, barring the part where he tried to punch him senseless. (But that was to give him a chance to prove his worth to the gods, right?)
"Oh pleeease tell me the Many-Angled Ones aren't trying to wiggle their way into our dimension again," Nova said in exasperation as he walked in, immediately taking to the air and flying over to help Hercules punch the damn thing back through the portal.
"Last time I dealt with those guys I almost got trapped in a dying universe. With Thanos." A pause. "With a very, very angry Thanos."
no subject
"'Tis not Gordian, but it will do. Well met, Nova. Your aid is much appreciated - while I do not wish to hurt him, he does seem to be quite wroth with me - and I think that he would be much better suited to his home dimension, to vent his wrath without harming the delicate equipment hereabouts."
He pauses then, thoughtfully reflecting on that last comment.
"Would you say that an angry Thanos is worse, or the smirking puppeteer that is his more usual mien? I have found that when he is angry, it tells me that something he did not expect has happened, so much the better for us."
no subject
"Angry Thanos," Rich answered immediately, without even a second's hesitation. "Angry Thanos is worse."
He dug his feet into the floor to give the tentacle being a good hard shove with the Nova Force, trying to use enough force to move it along without going overkill and eviscerating the thing.
"It wasn't the usual 'my plans are ruined' angry, though. This was 'I'm going to destroy all of existence to get Death's attention.' Vengeful-ex-that-can't-take-no-for-an-answer angry." He paused. "You could say he was a little wroth. A lot wroth, really."
no subject
He's probably kidding. After all, if anyone knows about wroth, it's Hera. And he was on the receiving end of a lot of it.
With the aid of the Nova Force, and his own deific strength, Hercules can make steady headway against the grasping alien, despite its attempts to latch onto every grabbable thing in the lab, burbling all the while.
"I should probably rest for a few weeks before trying another dimension. This trip has been quite the workout."
The comment causes the alien to burble more angrily, as it reads some double entendre in Hercules's words, but it's soon forced through the portal.

"So how does this work? Pym said he took readings of newly arrived people for some kind of dimensional resonance to help the portal scan and find potential locations the other heroes might be in the multiverse, but do you go in and just wander around trying to find 'em?"
Okay so maybe he was grounded to Earth by his brother and his friends, but wandering around in other dimensions seemed like a good way to keep busy. And hell, if he went in sometimes with Hercules, that was a good person to have covering his back.

"I was not fully convinced that I was being used to the full extent of my abilities, so I asked Pym and the others if they might have a suggestion to alleviate my.. restlessness. They were not convinced this method of search would be fruitful, but in essence, you have the right of it. The heroes have returned have done so in different locations, times .. Richards was convinced some may have landed in other dimensions, unable to travel back under their own power."
Hercules offers a shrug, and continues.
"'Tis a simple enough task. I wander, seeking tales of men and women in strange costumes with strange powers. I often don't speak the local languages, but I can usually make myself understood."
Sorry for the long wait, dude, got caught in multiple graduations and applying for grad school
"I've got auto-translation in this thing. It usually only needs to analyze a language for a little bit before it figures it out."
Which might make that bit even easier.
"And I can't stand being grounded like this. I promised my brother I'd take a break and stay local for a bit, to take it easy for a while, but I'm already going stir-crazy. And teeechnically he just said I should take a break from flying from world to world fixing problems, he didn't say anything about walking through portals to 'em."
No worries.
"Confined to Earth, when once you called the stars your home? It is enough to give anyone 'cabin fever'. A feeling I know all too well. You should talk to the scientists and make the arrangements to go at once. Perhaps you and I might have a competition, to see who befriends the most alien princesses."
no subject
He was pretty good at attracting the attention of green alien babes and such. And blue ones. And pink ones.
Somehow. Who the hell knows how that happened?
"Why don't we toss in a second contest running alongside it to see who accidentally causes the most unintentional diplomatic incidents? That's always fun to bet on."
At least when you were betting on that kind of thing with someone like Starlord.

Finally, he calms enough to reply.
"If you think you are ready to contend with the man who all but invented them, I accept."
