[LN] Colonel Sanders in the house

The thing with superspeed and cooking was that it was great for food prep but it still took just as long for things to cook as they always did. Kon had tried heatvision in the past, to speed things along, but that'd always had disastrous results. Using it to warm food, though, that worked and that was how he reheated the first batch of fried chicken he'd made after he finished the last batch. He also used it to reheat the gravy.

It was a proper gravy, a creamy sawmill gravy. He was crazy proud of his gravy. He'd never been able to replicate Ma's cooking 100% but he sure came close with the gravy.

The lounge area had lots of comfy chairs and was an ideal place for people to relax and hang out while eating fried chicken so he set up shop near all the comfy couches, putting down plate after plate of fried chicken and biscuits. The biscuits had been made in a massive batch and had been left warming in the oven so they nice and warm and flaky.

He danced around as he finished cooking his massive chicken dinner to one of those ipod stereos. He had an ipod full of girly pop that he'd nicked from the lab. At first he thought it was maybe Honey Lemon's but when he saw that the playlist names had somehow been programmed in Interlac, he figured out it was Lyle or Brainy's. In the past, their inclination towards girly pop music was something he might have ribbed them over but now? Now he danced around and sang to Katy Perry's "Roar" like nobody's business.

Between the music and the smell of delicious fried chicken and biscuits, most of the myths at the Pole would come see what the fuss was about but in case some of them didn't, Kon had made a whole tray of biscuits as a treat for the elves and he used them as a preemptive reward for getting the others.

"Go, my minions!" he cried out, tossing biscuits to them. "Go and get the others so they may feast!"

Out of gratitude for the delicious biscuits, they saluted him and spread out to bring everyone's attention to the glorious spread. Anyone that came to see what the fuss was about would be treated to an early dinner of delicious fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, and for the vegetarians among them (like Lyle and Brainy), grits, collard greens, black-eyed peas, and mashed potatoes.

Yes, he'd gone all out. It was almost Easter and that meant a few people would be having an Easter here instead of with their families, right? So it'd be a good one. He also figured doing it before Easter was a good idea in case Bunny needed their help or something on actual Easter Day.

When people started showing up, they were treated to the sight of a rather spectacular feast and the sight of Kon dancing around between the lounge and the kitchen as he finished making one last boatload of gravy and cleaned up. He was wearing an apron that said 'Kiss my grits!'

"Go ahead and tuck in," he said to people as they started showing up. "It's Before-Easter Dinner! And while I can't claim I'm as good a cook as the lady I learned to cook from, who I learned to cook from is a genuine Kansas farmer so it's still finger-lickin' good."

Peter scrambled to his feet - bad enough that this guy had already figured out who he was (crap crap crap), but if he kept this up, everyone else would know too.

"I...I..." he stammered. Everything he had been afraid of happening had just happened, and what was he even supposed to say? But soon he started feeling not just like the rug was pulled out from underneath him. He started feeling just a little bit angry, too.

"It's supposed to be a secret identity! Secret! Not...information freely available on google!" he exploded. "It's bad enough that too many people back home already know who I am! It is too much to ask for people in completely different universes to not know that I'm Spider-man?!"

For a moment Rich considered picking the biscuits up off the floor but the elves got to them first.

"Hey, hey, I know it's pretty freaky but it was gonna happen at some point. This parallel universe stuff can be a pain like that."

It was kind of a jerk move, he had to admit, but what was the point of hiding it? Agonizing over it? There really was nothing they could do here and it would've come out eventually.

"Look, all it would've taken was me seeing you in one fight and I would've figured out you were a version of him - and given how obvious he was, your secret ID wouldn't have taken that long after. I've fought side by side with my Spider-Man often enough. You move exactly the way he does and it's pretty distinctive."

Nova sat down in a chair and nudged another one across from him with his foot.

"C'mon, have a seat, we'll talk about it. Mostly I wanted to be sure you were you because me and my Spider-Man go way back."

He added, "And with this world knowing, think about it this way: that means your story means something to the people here. They look up to you." He looked over at him, his eyes friendly. "Maybe almost as much as I look up to the Spidey I know."

It wasn't malicious, what he just did. Mostly, it'd just been him wanting to be sure. Because it was reassuring that he was there, even if he was younger. And because he was younger, that meant maybe Nova could reassure him if he needed it, too.

"I know, I just..." Peter's shoulder's slumped. "I just didn't want it to happen," he mumbled.

He hovered, for a moment, before sliding into that seat across from Nova. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "I'm not your Spider-man. I mean, I'm him, yeah, but I'm not...him him." And he didn't know if that Spider-man was worth being looked up to or not, but with the amount of screw ups Peter had made...well. He wasn't sure anyone should be looking up to him at all. "How...how exactly do you know, um, him?"

"Don't worry, kid, I know you're not the same. I've met dimensional alternates of people before, including a different version of my own brother. With that stuff, people tend to be similar but not the same."

Poor guy looked so uncomfortable that Rich decided to try his best at putting him at ease.

"I met my Spider-Man the night my uncle died. He was murdered and Parker was a college student then. Young guy, though, maybe in his first or second year? A little bit older than you. My uncle was a scientist and Parker's professor sent him over to use my uncle's research library. I slugged him when we first met, actually. Both when I met him as Parker and when I met him as Spider-Man. He was in the house when my uncle was killed so I thought he'd done it, at first. Then, later, I ran into him as Spider-Man, and thought maybe he'd done it, so we fought, but we worked together to find the real killer. I worked out neither of them'd done it because it was a costumed villain and I saw both of them in the same room with the murderer." A pause. "Wasn't until right now that I realized I'd never seen them in the same room with each other. He helped me bring my uncle's killer to justice - and we saved each other's butts more than once during it all. At one point we got tossed in a river tied to an anchor together."

For something so harrowing, he sure had a fond look on his face.

"He later went on to become a photographer at the Bugle - one who conveniently always seemed to get good shots of Spider-Man. Everything just clicked right now with that."

He went on, "Then we teamed up tons of times over the years. One time he even helped my teammate Night Thrasher save me from this terrorist group that kidnapped and tortured me trying to what figure out what made me tick. And he was one of the only older heroes that really looked out for us younger guys. The Avengers never gave us the time of day, really, but Spidey always tried to teach us on the fly. He'd started young like us, had to figure it all out on his own, so he was always telling us about his mistakes and what he'd learned from 'em so we didn't make 'em, too."

He'd always been good to younger heroes like the New Warriors.

"He was always saying stuff like: 'With great power comes great responsibility.'"

Oddly enough, Rich was...well, not quite putting Peter at ease, per se, but helping him to not quite think so much on how huge and terrifying being public with his identity was. It helped that for Peter, Rich's story was very, very easy to sympathise with.

"I...I'm sorry. About your uncle. I know how that feels. I don't know if he...I don't know if the same thing happened in your universe, or even if he told you about it if it did, but my uncle was murdered too. It was a burglar, and I...I could have stopped it. I should have stopped it. I saw him, earlier that night, mugging this couple and I didn't do anything all. And he was the one who always told me, about how with great power came great responsibility, and I didn't listen. I didn't understand, not then. If I had, he'd still..." Peter trailed off. The words be here hung in the air, unsaid.

"He...he's why I'm Spider-man. Because I can't let what happened to my uncle happen to someone else. Not if I'm able to stop it. You uncle shouldn't have died either, but it's good that I...he helped you."

It felt so strange, spilling out his life story like this to someone he'd just met. Even if that person had actually known Peter for a long, long time. But strange as it was, it didn't really feel...bad.

Then something else that Rich said finally registered. "Wait, I became a photographer?!"

It was something he was still grateful for, Spider-Man helping him bring the murderer to justice. His uncle had been a kindly, even silly older man with a love of word games and puzzles. He hadn't deserved what'd happened to him.

So the two Peters were the same in a lot of respects, it seemed. In Rich's universe, Spider-Man didn't tell him the story about the uncle but he'd told enough people that it was common knowledge that losing someone had pushed him into it all.

"Yeah, Parker works for the Daily Bugle. Takes a lot of pictures of Spider-Man. I think he even wrote a book about his photography career? That's part of how I just put it all together."

There'd been far too many little coincidences.

"Guy's also married to a supermodel, I think. Lucky bastard."

"What? He takes photos for the Bugle? That's not fair! Jameson said he'd only give me fifty when I tried, but he gets a job?" Peter fumed. "Okay, he kinda still have me a job anyway, but that was only because no one working there knew a thing about how to code a website..."

So now even his alternate self is more successful than he is. Wonderful.

The next thing though, that really just short-circuited Peter's brained entire. Married? To a supermodel? Him?!

"Wh...what? I'm...what?!"

"I don't know that he got paid well for it but that was what he was known for, at least. I don't know much about his civilian ID - like I said, I only just put two and two together."

That didn't necessarily mean it was a good job he had going for him.

"But I do know Parker was married to Mary Jane Watson, the supermodel and actress. 'Cause she's pretty famous. She was on Secret Hospital. Dunno if they still are - I saw some stuff in the tabloids that played up some drama but I don't waste my time with that stuff."

She'd starred with the Toothpicks's mother, incidentally. Small world.

That might be so, but to a teenager like Peter...well, he had admittedly limited idea of what a 'good job' was. Generally it tended to veer towards 'anything that wasn't working in fast food'.

"Mary...MJ? I married MJ? For real?" Peter said, his face breaking out into a grin that ran from ear to ear. "And she - she's famous? That - that's awesome! If anyone deserves it, she does."

"Far as I know. Like I said, I don't really pick up the tabloids. Other than one day or so that I went home, I haven't been on Earth in ages."

It'd only been the one day. The day he'd decided the world was crazy and he wanted off.

"Funny thing is? A superhero friend of mine's mom was her costar."

It wasn't like he needed to protect Robbie's ID here. Peter could just look it up and after Stamford, it was public knowledge back home anyway. Speedball was "the most hated man in America," after all.

"Small world, right?"

"Yeah, small world," Peter said, sounding not that interested in his superhero friend. Hey, he'd never heard of this guy. Why would he want to talk about them when they could talk about MJ, and her awesome career?

"So, so MJ's an actress too? What kind of things has she been in? Was she an actress first, or a model?" Actress, Peter would have thought, but with all of this multiverse craziness, who even knows?

"I think a model? That's the first thing I remember seeing her in. Magazine ads and billboards for perfume or something."

He did remember her. Slightly. She was pretty damn gorgeous, striking enough to stick out even among supermodels.

He added, "She was pretty good in Secret Hospital, though. Soap operas aren't really my thing but I think I saw an interview once where she seemed really sweet. But I caught an episode or two and she played this real nasty character on the show and you'd never have guessed they were the same person."

He dug around in his memory. Clearly this Peter was sweet on his version of Mary Jane so he understood why he was excited to find this stuff out. But fashion and modeling and soap operas weren't things Rich had ever taken an interest in.

"Actually I remember something bad happened because of it, where some crazy fan attacked her because they were mad over what her character did. I know I saw that on the news. But they said she wasn't hurt or anything. She was still in some model stuff and movies after."

She shook his head.

"Unfortunately, that's all I really know. I never took much of an interest in that stuff - or even the news. I was always busy superheroing, scraping by in my normal life since I was dirt poor, or up in space doing something or the other.""

"Wow. MJ, a model. I never would have thought. I mean, not that she couldn't be a model. MJ...MJ's gorgeous. I just didn't think that would be her thing." Acting, though...acting he could kinda see. Maybe, one day. If his MJ was the same as this other MJ. "Though I'm not so keen to hear about the crazy fans."

Was the other him helping to keep an eye out for her, there? He hoped he was. (Right now he was definitely making a mental note of 'watch out for insane fans if MJ ever becomes ridiculously famous', that's for sure.)

"It's okay. To be honest it's amazing you know anything about her at all. I mean, you're from a whole different universe, and yet you know MJ's future career. That's just weird."

[personal profile] iamresponding 2015-04-30 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Her potential future career. But still, if she's anything like the one in my world she's probably going places." A pause. "And by that same principle, so are you."

Hes grinned at him.

"Although, judging from your age, you've probably got a long road to go down before you're anything like him. That's how it works with people like us, though. I started out just this ordinary, boring kid from Long Island." He raised his eyebrows. "Then I wound up the equivalent of a five-star general leading a few hundred species in a galactic space war."

"Assume I don't die first. Not that I'm planning on it, you know, but...well. You know." There were, unfortunately, a lot of people out there who'd be all to glad to off him.

"How...how do you end up as a general in an intergalactic space war? Like...we don't can't even travel to other planets yet! Wait, do we get space travel in the near future? Please tell me we have space travel in the near future. That would be like, all of my birthdays all at once."
iamresponding: (Default)

[personal profile] iamresponding 2015-06-02 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Nope. I mean, there's some limited space travel - I'm pretty sure Reed Richards has something going on - but I'm one of the lucky few who gets to tool around space on a whim."

He went on, "See, the way I got my powers was there was this alien, an officer in this intergalactic police force, who chased this space pirate to Earth's solar system. He was dying, and back then, there weren't quite as many superheroes. I mean, the world's teeming with 'em now and there were a few teams like the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, but he was still afraid Zor would wreck Earth like Xandar so he gave his power as a Centurion to an Earthling completely at random. Hoping that it'd help make it so Earth was just a little better prepared."

He gestured to himself with his thumb.

"I was with my girlfriend eating some ice cream at our favorite after-school joint and got hit by an alien ray beam from space. It was like something right out of a sci fi novel."
