True to his word, Hiccup (And Toothless) did eventually check out the television, after the Viking had taken the dragon out for a long, tiring flight. One of the Yetis showed him the Pole's Netflix account. He idly flipped through the various shows, trying to find something that would catch his attention.

I still say we should've watched that thing about catching tuna. Toothless bespoke, feeling a bit peckish, as always. The dragon was shrunk down, curled up on the couch next to his partner.

"We'll watch. it later. Forgive me if I don't have the same interest in fish that you do. Here's something," Hiccup said as he gave the TV a closer look.

"Bill Nye...the Science Guy. Sounds worth a look."

He selected it, watched a a brief intro skit, flashing images set to weird music, and then a man in a blue labcoat and bowtie began to bring him sweet, glorious understanding. It was packaged in a way that those who'd never run into the concepts being presented could understand what was being discussed, like preteens, or in this specific case a Viking from the 11th Century.

Hiccup was hooked.

They thought it was relatively safe. The twins were being sent out with a group of people that were essentially adults. Even Raph was an older teen and probably more experienced at fighting than all of them put together. The fearling they were looking for wasn't even that powerful, if the mini-fairies were to be believed. It was a construct, several fearlings reconfigured into something new, but not that powerful.

It needed to be hunted down and destroyed but it was something that Mabel alone could've handled. Between the five of them, they made short work of it and it looked to be a nice little on-the-job lesson for the twins, where they got to fight while under the protection and guidance of the others.

The problem was the fear. Fear was always the problem. That fear was just a coincidence but as coincidences sometimes went, it was a dangerous coincidence.

Not far from where they'd destroyed the fearling, there was a little girl who had played one of her older sister's video games and it had frightened her. As she went to bed that night with the fear clutching at her heart, the only thought that helped her fight the fear was the thought of two of her favorite cartoon characters - ones that fought scary things like ghosts all the time - fighting the scary ghosts in the game.

She knew they were the kind of twins that could beat the ghosts. That was the thought she fell asleep to, a thought that gained power in that twilight between waking and sleeping.

Where they were in the woods, that thought - and that fear - temporarily took on a life of its own, reshaping reality and assigning them all roles in the story it was trying to mold. A sudden mist swept through the dark woods and every myth in the group found themselves powerless. They still had their gear and their skill and wit but their myth powers were gone.

Even worse than that, as the mist obscured them from each other and they suddenly found themselves separated. They were suddenly all in different sections of an ancient, decrepit Japanese village, one that was caught in a strange and eerie twilight. Dancing around them in the breeze were glowing crimson butterflies that fluttered off, as if they were showing them which way they should go.

Whether it was safe to follow them or not was the question at hand.

Every so often, in the rare times where things were quiet on Berk, Hiccup and Toothless would take off and tear around the sky for a few hours to clear their heads. Chiefing, and Alphaing, was difficult work even for those who'd been doing it for years, and the pair's experience with either was less than optimal. The flights were their way of relaxing.

Of course, it'd be more relaxing if they weren't, according to the position of the stars in the sky, suddenly hundreds of miles away from where they were supposed to be, being chased by nine armored humanoid beings flying monstrous creatures that even Hiccup hesitated to call dragons. To top it all off, the nine were followed by a small army of shadowy creatures equally as monstrous as their mounts.

Faced with this, it wasn't surprising that Hiccup had decided to put off figuring out why he could now hear Toothless's thoughts until after he and the Night Fury were out of mortal danger.

Hiccup turned his head back to take a look at their pursuers. "Okay bud, don't panic, but I think they may actually be gaining on us."

What?! Toothless's eyes widened, How can they be gaining on us? I'm supposed to be the fastest thing up here.

"I'm sorry, but apparently you aren't."

So then, what's the plan?

Hiccup shrugged. "Way I see it is we've got one of two options. We can either try to outlast them on endurance, or turn around and take them head on. Honestly, I'm not liking our chances either way."

Well, if we're doomed no matter what, I think we should do our best to make 'em regret it.

As one, the pair turned around, Toothless's spine beginning to glow a bright, luminescent blue. They charged, the dragon firing explosive balls of plasma into the mass of ink-black terrors.
